Frequently Asked Questions
Simple answers to common questions about Modela.
You can enrol through your SACCO, chama, cooperative or agro-dealer. USSD enrolment will be available at launch. In bulk flows, each farmer still confirms individually by SMS or USSD.
Premiums are paid via M-Pesa. You receive an STK Push prompt on your phone. Premium timing is aligned to harvest or livestock-sale cash windows, not a fixed calendar.
When satellite, weather or area-yield data confirms the trigger for your area has been met, the payout is sent directly to your M-Pesa — no claims inspector or paperwork.
Yes. You can grant or withdraw consent for insurance servicing, credit referral and marketing separately at any time. Withdrawal stops the relevant data use immediately.
With your separate consent, Modela packages your verified farm and insurance data for existing lenders (SACCOs, AFC, movable-asset lenders). We never lend money ourselves and never hold your loan.
No. Modela is a distribution intermediary that distributes and services cover on behalf of regulated underwriters. The underwriting risk sits with the insurer; any credit risk sits with the lender.
We are built for basic phones and often-offline farmers. USSD and SMS are the primary channels, supported by partner bulk enrolment and a field app only where needed.
Persistency is the annual renewal rate. A renewing farmer does not need to be re-acquired, so better retention lowers costs and builds the trust that makes the whole model work.
